Word Choice Help!

I need the past participle of 'to rend'. Both 'rent' and 'rended' work. I prefer 'rent', but is that confusing? "

(Context = something like "I am made of gunpowder and bone fragments, of rent steel and frostbite and the bullet that burned my father's cheek")
